Twenty-year-old runner André Retief has proven to be a force to be reckoned in the 400 metres.

5 Fun facts about myself:

1. I am a big Christian and believe that everything I do and achieve is done with the help of God and Jesus.

2. Back when I was a junior I did sprints, but was the slowest in the class and that caused me to deviate to high jump and long jumps.

3. I love technology and especially computers. I build my first computer when I was grade 6 and I am currently working at Computer Kit Namibia, which handles computer software for pharmacies.

4. I want to be a programmer one day and I am currently studying and going through code in Python in my free time.

5. I am a big dog lover. I have a silver dapple dachshund, Max, and I love him like he's my own child.

What do you do in your free time?

I play video games and especially online video games in my free time.

Do you compete in any other sport codes?

Athletics is the only sport code I compete in. I used to do gymnastics, but got an illness that caused kidney infection and ended up damaging my kidney and caused me not to be able to do contact sports.

Who are the athletes you look up to?

I look up to Wayde Van Niekerk, who currently holds the world record in 400 metres and who grew up in rough circumstances, but still proved that your start doesn't determine your finish, and Karsten Warholm, who holds the 400 metre hurdles record and has shown the world race after race that nothing is impossible.

What is your message to aspiring athletes?

My motivation I can give the rising stars of our generation and those to come is: Never give up. Life is tough and it will get tougher. There will be times when you feel like you’re dying and you want to quit, but remember your performance and the person you become isn't determined by how you start the race, it's
