The Sanlam Namibia Tennis Association junior tournament went into full swing last weekend where forty participants between the ages of eight and 18 took part in both singles and doubles matches.

Most of the matches were round-robin, meaning only the u.16 boys played off in two sections.

There are two sections for the U8s, namely the orange court and the red court. These are adapted to make it easier for the younger children to play by adjusting the court, rackets, balls and net height.

The Orange court was dominated by winner Abraham Alemu and his runner-up Nathan Chase. On the Red court for the girls it was Odycia Karaerua who came up victorious and closely behind her was Madison Bergh. For the boys it was Liam Forster who won with Roelou Lowe in second place.

The other age group results were:

U.10 girls: Raica Lara Coelho emerged as the winner as she won all her matches, while the runner-up Tji tji Mbetjiha lost only one match to Coelho by 2-8.

U.16 girls: The matches for this age group were intense and the players gave it their all, but in the end there could only be one winner. Agnes Steenkamp beat Eldine van Wyk in the final 6-0, 6-2.

U.16 boys: This section saw Johannes Swartz face off against Gerhard Barnard in the final, with Barnard the winner by 6-1, 6-2. Afterwards Swartz stated that he was focused and confident as he stepped on to the court and was happy to achieve his goal of either coming in first or second.

“I will be victorious in my next tournament,” he predicted.

U.18 boys: Risto Shikongo won the boys singles by reaching the final against Dantago Gawanab and winning 6-4, 6-4.

U.16 girls doubles: Tinashe Mukumba teamed up with Tuna Nkandi to gain victory over Eldine van Wyk and Tji tji Mbetjiha 6-1, 7-5.

U.16 boys doubles: Diken de Jongh and Johannes Swartz won comfortably against Albertus Brinkmann and Carlos Uirup, 6-1, 6-3.

U.18 boys doubles: This was a very tough and yet entertaining match with many close calls.

In the end only one team could walk away victorious, as Dantago Gawanab and Tevin Kyle Tate beat Risto Shikongo and Ronaldo Uirab 6-3, 6-3.

The president of the NTA, Sam Kaulinge, thanked all the players for participating and especially the sponsor Sanlam for their support towards the tennis community and local tournaments.

The next junior tournament will be the Sanlam tournament for the U12s and U14s on 15 October. Players are encouraged to register for the tournament.
