Wrestlers back from Tunis

BANK Windhoek and the Namibian National Olympic Committee recently showed their commitment to the Namibian Wrestling Federation by sponsoring the sport code with funds that will go towards their preparation for the Commonwealth Games. The Namibian Wrestling Federation has set long-term objectives aimed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

These objectives include having two qualifiers in 2012 and four in 2016. The Federation views the Commonwealth Games scheduled for 2010 and 2014 as important opportunities for development and exposure in preparation for the Olympic Games.

Namibian wrestlers recently showed their mettle outside the borders of Namibia when they participated in the African Junior Championships in Tunis, Tunisia. The final results saw Paavo Hihangwa end in fourth place in both the Greco Roman and freestyle; Tromp Conradie in fourth place in the Greco Roman style and second in the freestyle; Philip Balhao in third place for both the Greco Roman and freestyle events; and Angula Shikongo second place in the Greco Roman and fourth in the freestyle.

This international experience is of utmost importance in order to groom the wrestlers in terms of the different types of food, accommodation, languages and officiating. “Bank Windhoek is proud of our association with the Namibian National Olympic Committee and the Namibian Wrestling Federation. We are committed to the development of young people and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle,” said Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment at Bank Windhoek.
