Windhoek citizens ignoring requests to save water

Mandy Rittmann
Concerned citizen writes:

My style is not to run to the newspapers with each and every story that bothers me, but when it comes to our water crisis in Namibia I have no other choice but to air my voice.

Some citizens in Windhoek just do not give a thing about the worst water crisis that Namibia has seen in the past decade. I am talking about people who are still washing their cars with garden hoses; people watering their gardens with automatic sprinklers and the works.

Now I have tried to raise a complaint with the Municipality of Windhoek and City Police, but to no avail. I also tried to speak to the citizens wasting our water, but they just ignore me.

Henceforth this communique to you. Attached you will find evidence of neighbours in Olympia apparently not caring about our water crisis.

In the one picture you will see an evergreen garden (not really evergreen, just a lot of water). This home owner has an automatic sprinkler system which runs every morning at 06h00. No wonder the grass is so green while the rest of Windhoek is dull and dry.

In the other picture you will see water running down the street. This citizen waters her garden with a hose every second evening until the water runs away in the street. Not to mention the washing of cars by garden hose every weekend.

In another instance the gardener at a complex waters the 13 palm trees on the pavement by garden hose twice a week. Those trees do not require any water as their roots are deep enough to take water from the ground.

I am writing this email to you, dear editor, as maybe there is a way to expose these offenders to the public. By using the newspaper as medium, the newspaper can invite the public to share their stories and photos and by doing this, can we put a stop to this and save every last drop.

Imagine how many culprits can be exposed in Windhoek.

(Republikeinshares this reader''s concerns, like those of many other readers who have shared contributions dealing with alleged disregard for water saving measures in the city. We however must also put on record that while trying to promote a saving culture we must also take the privacy of alleged "culprits" into account. Due to this consideration certain details provided are not published. - Editor)
