What is our Government doing about the children?
RETIRED ANGLICAN PRIEST WRITES:
Today, 16th September 2021, as I was driving down Sam Nujoma Drive I observed a young boy of about 6 or 7 years old lying in the middle of the road and sobbing.
Cars were driving around him but nobody stopped. I too did not stop because of shock and fear that I might be the witness of the killing.
I drove to a food store further down the road and got out of my car. I felt terrible, I felt that I had abandoned a child in need.
I then bought some food, got in my car and drove up Sam Nujoma to the place where I had last seen the boy. The boy was still there – thankfully not lying in the road as before. He recognized my car and ran over to me. I gave him some food and some money – because he said he was in terrible pain from his bad teeth. He said he lived in Katutura with his grandmother because his parents were both dead.
Now my question is this.
What is our Namibian government doing about helping street children, lost children, children who have become addicts because this is the only way they can sooth their pain? Please can we have an answer from our government on how you are helping the growing number of street children?
What can you tell us please? We want to believe that our government also care about these lost children.
Please president Geingob, do something for our impoverished and neglected street children – it's not just the rich that are citizens, so are the children living under bridges and in the veld.
