Westside celebrates its best
Westside High School hosted its annual prize-giving and valedictory ceremony last week.

Westside High School has been faithful to its traditions ever since 1977. It is against this background that the school hosted its annual prize-giving and valedictory ceremony last week.
The prize-giving took place on the evening of 23 September. Learners and parents were invited to attend this very auspicious occasion. On this platform, the school is able to show appreciation to the diligent learners, who have dedicated their time to making Westside extremely proud.
Academic awards
It’s not easy to obtain an academic award, because an 80% average in a subject is a prerequisite for learners in grades 8 to 10. For grades 11 and 123 a 75% average per subject is a prerequisite.
Full academic colours this year went to Mwale Nyambe (grade 10) and Alliyah Mbambi (grade 11), who said that they worked really hard to achieve these awards.
The best in grade awards went to Jennifer Haikola (grade 8), Tuyakula Shipena (grade 9), Mwale Nyambe (grade 10) and Alliyah Mbambi (grade 11).
Special awards
Special awards were given to matriculants, who have exhibited not only exceptional diligence in their academics, but also leadership.
Learners who were awarded in this category have displayed constant commitment to the school and remain reliable to execute any task assigned to them.
Precious Nghitaunapo received the principal’s award, Denzel-Lee Claasen received the photographic enterprises award and Sylviano Afrikaner the most versatile learner award.
Dux learner
Metumu Tjimune received the Dux pupil award. It was of course no surprise to the school, as she has been the best in her grade since grade 1.
Metumu has five of her six subjects on higher-level. She was the best achiever in accounting, biology, English first language, mathematics and physical science. She also received a merit for Afrikaans second language. In addition to all the pressure exerted on her to perform academically, Metumu has also been the editor of the school’s newspaper for three consecutive years. Westside wishes her only the best for upcoming examinations.
Sports awards
When it comes to sports, Westside has always ensured that all skilled learners receive nothing but the best for their hard work.
Half sport colours went to Hafeni Hanghome for soccer and full sport colours went to James-Dean Goagoseb for kickboxing. Goagoseb also represented Namibia in Atlanta, Georgia where he won gold. In athletics, Wedly Tsumib was awarded the senior victor ludorum award and Najima Forbes the senior victrix ludorum award.
Tears of joy
It was a day filled with tears of joy. Learners bid a teary farewell to their friends. Parents and family of the matriculants were invited to attend this momentous event. Speeches by the learners touched everyone’s hearts. In the end, Ivan Nakashona, the comedian, made us choke with laughter. Trusty Hailaulah and Ray Moody showcased their piano talent, accompanied by the velvet voices of Garere Geises, Helena Haimbodi, Eerike Tjongarero and Amor van Diemen, to name a few. The event ended with family members taking pictures and having a special table where parents could interact. The school hall main portal was full of people taking pictures and making videos, as they didn’t want to ever lose such wonderful memories. It was indeed a day to remember.
