Welcome boost for DAN
BANK Windhoek recently demonstrated their support for the Diabetes Association of Namibia with a generous donation of N$22 000. The Diabetes Association of Namibia (DAN) is a welfare organisation aiming to promote public awareness about diabetes mellitus as well as to encourage primary prevention of the illness through various informational and educational programmes.
"The Diabetes Association of Namibia is continuously in the process to promote the social, mental and physical well-being of people affected by diabetes mellitus. "We also have support groups to better educate the family members who are taking care of them. With this generous contribution from Bank Windhoek, we will be able to continue with, and even improve, these programmes,” said Dr Matthew Mojekwu, co-ordinator of DAN.
"Bank Windhoek is aware of the difficulties people with diabetes face on a daily basis. Therefore we are pleased to be able to assist the Diabetes Association of Namibia with this grant which will help diabetes suffers to overcome some of these diffi culties,” said Danie von Solms, branch manager of the bank's Oshakati branch.
DAN uses different means by which they aim to educate and motivate diabetes sufferers and their families. These include:
• Support groups in which members can share ideas, knowledge and experiences of diabetes mellitus;
• articulation of these views and experiences in regular publications a few languages;
• holding regular public lectures by experts on diabetes mellitus as well as promoting training and research information on this medical condition; and
• carrying regular health awareness campaign programmes such as Run for Life, Walk for Live and Pound your Mahangu.
The money handed over to DAN were generated through the ninth annual Bank Windhoek Golf Day in aid of welfare that took place mid September 2007.
