The Namibian football national team proved too strong for Botswana as they beat our neighbours 3-1 in an international friendly match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Peter Shalulile showed why he is one of the most influential players in the team after scoring two goals.

Former Black Africa player Roger Katjiteo also got his name on the scoring list.

It was sweet revenge for the Brave Warriors who lost 5-4 on penalties to Botswana's Zebras last year.

Namibia had to fight for a comeback in the game after Botswana's Mpho Kgaswane scored an early goal just six minutes in the game.

However, Shalulile equalised midway through the first half, to sent both teams level into the break.

In the second half, Shalulile's lightning speed was too much for Simasane Mathumo, as after a clearing header from Riaan Hanamub in the Warriors area, Shalulile went toe-to-toe with the defender, outpaced him, and ran into the box before unleashing a low shot into the left corner to make it 2-1 on 58 minutes.

Substitute Itamunua Keimuine should have made it 3-1 but missed the target later on after some fine play down the right by another substitute, Immanuel Heita. Midfielder Dynamo Fredericks also came close with a chance in each half that he blew over while Benyamin Nenkavu was thwarted from close range on two occasions by the brilliant Kabelo Dame in the Botswana goal in the first half.

Keeagile Kobe then saw red with four minutes left as he deliberately stamped on a horizontal Keimuine to give referee Jonas Shongedi no other option then to show him a red card.

Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti then brought on Roger Katjiteo for Petrus Shitembi in added time and he combined well with another substitute, Absalom Iimbondi , beating the offside trap that ended with Katjiteo tapping in Namibia's third goal.

The coach said that they could not play a normal game like they usually do because they had to play long balls.

“We couldn't play our normal game starting from the back, and we then resorted to long balls because we have runners in Muna Katupose and Shalulile and that worked for us.

“We had a lot of chances in the first half and in the second half it was about giving chances to players on the bench and also keeping in mind the pressure from the fans. It was a good game for the fans and I'm glad we made it happen. We now have to play another friendly or two in November and this is all what we need”, Mannetti said. -Additional reporting by NFA
