Warning: Tax scam
The Ministry of Finance has issued a tax scam alert.
A certain Mr Martin van Wyk is calling random taxpayers, informing them of a tax refund due to them from the Ministry's Inland Revenue Department.
He also tells taxpayers they are in arrears which has to be settled first before the refund can be paid out, and that the Cash Office at said department is closed for business until January 2020.
The scammer requests taxpayers to make payment at Shoprite, and send the serial number and pin code to the cellphone number he will provide. He says payment can also be done through E-Wallet or Blue-Wallet.
The Ministry says Van Wyk is not an employee of the Inland Revenue Department and warned taxpayers to be on alert.
No official has the mandate to call any taxpayer and request payment through the three options mentioned.
All tax payments must be made at designated Cash Offices countrywide or with an Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) to the State Account Numbers as provided by die Inland Revenue Department.
