VW unveils R-Line Beetle
Only 50 units for sub-Saharan Africa.
The New Beetle is one of the world's best-known, most-loved and most individualistic cars out there. Volkswagen has refined the icon's design, engineering and technology. They've launched a limited-edition Beetle R-Line model with only 50 units being made available to participating Volkswagen dealerships. The good news is, one is coming to Namibia.
Sadly, according to the good people at AutoHaus, it's already been spoken for.
The Hippie got hipper
This new version of the Beetle stands out thanks to a stocky redesigned front bumper, larger central air inlet and carved panels which make it appear wider and sturdier.
Black trim elements on either outer edges emphasize the width and seemingly point the Beetle R-Line in a forward direction, implying motion.
There also a series of tiny, narrow inlets between the number plate and bonnet, hinting at the limited-edition's performance aspirations.
A really nice visual element is the elegant gloss-black skirting that runs all around the car. Also black on these versions is the central and lower part of the rear bumper and diffuser, which has been remodelled to complement the front of the car.
The exterior tweaks are rounded off by a new optional paint finish, White Silver Metallic, newly colour-coordinated 18-inch Ravenna Adamantium silver alloy wheels and smoked LED tail lights.
Snug as a bug
The Beetle's interior has a black painted dash pad and upper door panels, the glove compartment is in original Beetle style and the standard additional instrument gauges (boost pressure, oil temperature and stop watch) are located above the instrument panel. With all of this and ambient lighting, the Beetle R-Line proves it's much more than a novelty buy.
It comes with exclusive R-Line-inspired seats finished in contemporary “Kyalami” cloth upholstery, with an embroidered R-Line logo on the head restraints. The Crystal Grey “micro fibre” side bolsters provide excellent lateral support when cornering.
The Beetle R-Line is equipped as standard with the Composition Media radio system and eight speakers controlled through a 6.5-inch touch screen with Bluetooth, USB as well as App-Connect (only compatible with Apple CarPlay).
The optional “Fender” premium sound pack delivers a unique audio experience thanks to the 400 watt output from the eight speakers and sub woofer.
Ambient illumination around the speakers, in the door panels and under the door trim, make for an engaging visual experience and keeps this millennial Beetle funky and fun.
The Beetle R-Line has 10 key standard-specification details: 18-inch “Ravenna” alloy wheels, distinctive sporty
exterior styling elements, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED tail lights, Composition Media with App-Connect, ambient lighting, black painted dash pad, exclusive R-line interior sport seats, pedals in brushed stainless steel, leather steering wheel with gloss black inserts and R-Line logo and climatronic 2-zone air conditioning.
The limited edition Beetle comes with three paint finishes to choose from: Pure White, Tornado Red and the new White Silver Metallic, with the Black varnished roof as an option. In addition to paint finishes an extra three options are available to personalise the R-Line: panoramic sunroof, Fender sound system and technology package.
More than a styling kit
The Beetle R-Line comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4 engine that's been tweaked to 110 kW and offers a maximum torque of 250 Nm. According to VW, fuel consumption on the new Beetle R-Line is 5.7 liters/100 km.
Initial reports out of SA indicate that the R-Line 1.4 TSI 110 kW should retail in the area of N$420 000 - if you can get your hands on one that is. -QuickPic and own reporting
