Die Amerikaanse ­ambassade het verlede week 52 nuwe vrywilligers op Okahandja by die Vredeskorps ingelyf.

Dié korps is 'n program van die Amerikaanse regering waarin vrywilligers gebruik word om vir 'n tydperk van twee jaar tegniese bystand in ander lande te verleen en kapasiteit tot voordeel van die mense van die betrokke lande te bou.

Hul taak in Namibië sal wees om bystand met onderwys te verleen.

Mnr. Kevin Fleming, hoof van die Vredeskorps in Namibië, het by dié geleentheid gesê sedert 1990 het meer as 1 700 vrywilligers al hier diens gedoen.

Daar is tans meer as 150 ­vrywillige Vredeskorps-werkers in die land, wat in die velde van onderwys, gesondheid en gemeenskaps­ontwikkeling werk.

Voor hulle na verskillende dele van die land uitgeplaas word, ondergaan die vrywilligers eers 'n nege weke lange kruiskulturele opleidingsprogram.

Dit behels opleiding in een van nege tale wat in Namibië gepraat word.

Hulle leer ook oor Namibië se verskillende kulture sodat hulle hul werk in dié gemeenskappe sinvol kan verrig.
