As we commemorate the Day of the Namibian Woman and International Human Rights Day, My Zone visited learners from Delta Secondary School and asked them whether they think enough is being done to protect women and human rights in Namibia. Here is what they had to say.
Laurika Kuzatjike
I believe it is not enough because women are still suffering every day due to gender-based violence (GBV), it has become a “norm”. Even though we protested against it, it seems like women are not protected enough. The government should strengthen the human rights, so human rights are not violated.
Marlis Gaber
I don’t think so because women can still not walk around alone at night without feeling frightened or in danger. This is extremely sad because every day human rights are being violated and the government is doing almost nothing to change the situation.
Danica Lukaschik
I don’t think enough is being done, but on the other hand, the government can’t do anything about it. It depends on the people violating human rights, how they were brought up. In short, it starts at home. Then only can the government come in.
Cassandra Verster
No, there is not enough being done, as hundreds of women and children are still being sexually harassed in their everyday lives, which is indeed a violation of human rights. The government should strengthen acts to protect women and make them feel safe.
Sofia Bodenmüller
No matter what we do, it will never be enough to stop women from being abused. But as women, we can stand together and raise awareness and encourage men and women to both step forward and talk about any situation where their human rights were violated so justice can be served.
Ndeshimona Kuzatjike
No, because at my age, I still feel unsafe as a girl because a lot of our human rights as women are being violated and perpetrators still get away with it. The justice system should take it seriously when human rights are violated and make examples of anyone who violates it.
