Voigts retires as chairman of FNB

MR Dieter Voigts retired in November as non-executive chairman of the FNB Namibia Board after 22 years of service. Mr Voigts was appointed to the Regional Board of Barclays in 1986 as a member and in 1988 as chairman of the newly formed FNB Group.

He says: ?I was very proud of my appointment as a true and third generation Namibian. I was part of the growth and development of the group. In 1988 we had a balance sheet of N$482 million, and a profit of N$7 million. In 2010 we had a balance sheet of N$16 billion and profit of N$460 million.?

Some of the highlights of his career include meeting extraordinary people in and outside of FNB Namibia and the Group.

?It was a privilege and an honour to get to know people like Basil Hersov, group chairman, Dough Hoff, chairman of Barclays Namibia, Chris Ball, CEO of FNB SA, Viv Bartlett, director of FNB and Mr. P Shiimi, long serving director. Another highlight was our listing on the NSX ? we are still the only locally listed banking institution in Namibia.?

One of his challenges was the merger with SWABOU which was quite complicated at the time, but was resolved to the advantage of all involved. An absolute catastrophe, according to Mr Voigts, was the untimely passing of the late CEO Mr. Lazarus Ipangelwa who at the time virtually left the company without a ?head? and led to the restructuring of the group.

?Throughout my tenure as non-executive chairman I have been privileged to meet and work with tremendous people and I have had experiences I will always cherish. I am thankful for the support that I have enjoyed these past 22 years. To my successor Mr Claus Hinrichsen ? may you be as richly blessed during your tenure as I have been. Looking back I realize it was all great fun and has given me great satisfaction and pride. My sincere thanks to everybody who made it all so memorable for me.?
