Vleisreus staan gereed vir ‘maer jaar’

Kuddes moet herbou word ná die uitgerekte droogte.

Ellanie Smit - Meatco werk aan verskeie strategieë in voorbereiding op die moeilike jaar wat voorlê. Veegetalle moet weer opgestoot word ná die afgelope jare se verwoestende droogte.

Dít kan die Meatco-abattoir se omset drasties verminder.

Die maatskappy se huidige direksievoorsitter, mnr. Ronald Kubas, sê hulle verwag ’n moeilike jaar, aangesien boere hul kuddes moet herbou.

“As gevolg hiervan moet ons die volhoubaarheid van die maatskappy verseker.”

Volgens Kubas is daar verskeie strategieë om Meatco se kop bo water te hou.

Verwagte slaggetalle sal die maatskappy se besigheidstrategieë en begrotings beïnvloed.

Volgens Kubas het hulle Botswana besoek om vas te stel of Meatco van dié land se diere kan aankoop.

Hulle is ook in gesprek met die landbouministerie oor die verkryging van diere van die noordelike kommunale gebiede.

’n Ander moontlikheid is teling op ’n groter skaal en die implementering van voerstelsels.

“Omset van roumateriaal was nog altyd Meatco se grootste uitdaging,” sê Kubas.

Hy sê Meatco het hul strategiese plek in die landboubedryf bewys deur meer as 115 000 beeste te slag in ’n poging om hulp aan boere tydens die 2019-droogte te verleen.

In 2018 het Meatco 63 000 beeste geslag.

“Dis byna 85% meer as die vorige jaar, terwyl ons pryse konstant gebly het.”

Kubas sê Meatco het verlede jaar 130 vragte beesvleis – sowat 3 000 ton – na China gestuur.

“China is ’n baie winsgewende mark vir ons. Die aanvraag is baie groot. Hulle maak voorafbetalings en soek benevleis, wat die fabriek se uitgawes verminder,” sê hy.

Volgens Kubas is die uitdaging om genoeg beeste te slag om in die Chinese aanvraag te voorsien.

Meatco dra tussen 40% en 50% van die landbousektor se bruto binnelandse produk (BBP) by.

“Die maatskappy is ’n baie belangrike bron van buitelandse inkomste vir Namibië, en ’n kritieke afdeling van die veesektor.”

Ondanks plaaslike ekonomiese uitdagings en die uitgerekte droogte het Meatco lewensvatbaar gebly en voortgegaan om tot die landbousektor by te dra.

“Die maatskappy het veral tot die plaaslike ekonomie bygedra deur meer as N$1,1 biljoen in produsentpryse aan beesboere te betaal.”
