A function to mark the hand-over ceremony of the keys to the house was attended by Timotheus’ family, representatives from the Okahandja town council, the ministry of urban and rural development, Osona Village Estate developers and Vivo Energy Namibia.

The Shell V-Power Win-a-House Competition ran for a three-month period from June to August 2019 at all Shell retail outlets in Namibia. Motorists spending at least N$200 could enter into a draw via SMS for the ultimate prize – a house at the newly developed Osona Village Estate.

The campaign drew over 12 000 entries nationwide for the grand prize. Timotheus submitted 410 correct entries over the campaign period.

Elated

A clearly elated Gerhardo stated: “I am so happy to finally be a homeowner, as the dwelling my family currently occupies in Windhoek technically belongs to the bank. My family and I cannot wait to move into this beautiful home.”

Gerhardo, who normally fuels his vehicle at Shell, was drawn to the Win-a-House competition due to the need for a home for his family that is not only affordable but also convenient. The house, valued at N$350 000 is situated on the Osona Village Estate, 10 km from Okahandja and 50km from Windhoek.

The managing director of Vivo Energy Namibia, Edward Walugembe, in his congratulatory remarks to the winner, spoke of the need for corporate Namibia to align business and corporate goals with country and citizen needs. This is central to Vivo Energy’s overall business strategy.

“In our deliberations on the Shell V-Power promotion, we considered a myriad of prizes, however taking cognisance of the challenges faced by the country that fall outside our community investments scope such as the persistent drought, gender-based violence and a housing shortage. We settled on a house, with housing, a basic human need, proving the strongest motivation,” Walugembe said.

Smart partnership

The deputy director of housing in the ministry of urban and rural Development, Merrow Thaniseb, in his keynote address emphasised the increasing pressure that government faces in providing adequate and decent housing to its citizenry. He particularly cited the need for affordable and energy efficient accommodation and commended both Vivo Energy Namibia and Preferred Management Services, the developers of the Osona Village Estate, on demonstrating leadership in this area.

“I wish to congratulate the directors of Preferred Management Services on your successful implementation of the Osona Village Project – which provides a low-cost and secure housing solution to our citizens.

“I would also like to commend Vivo Energy Namibia for your highly significant and well thought out Win-a-House campaign, which should serve as a challenge to all corporate entities out there,” he said.

“Government alone cannot provide housing solutions to all and it is therefore under these strenuous economic circumstances that we welcome smart partnerships such as the one demonstrated by Osona Village Estate and Vivo Energy Namibia to help meet the demand for low-cost housing,” Thaniseb stated.
