Stadio Namibia, in collaboration with Nust, hosted an industry engagement webinar on evidence-based policing last week.

This virtual seminar was organised to engage policing students and people in the security sector, such as police officers, on this cutting-edge topic.

Taking the seminar online meant that more people could participate from the safety and comfort of their office or home.

Evidence-based policing is a new way of working to improve police effectiveness and build trust in the police. Some people refer to it as the future of policing.

This method of policing recognises that experience and intuition are crucial qualities, but even with those qualities police officers should be equipped with the most reliable and recent knowledge depending on their specific line of duty.

Dr Andrew Faul, researcher, policy and technical support expert with 17 years' experience working on policing, crime, violence, and human security from the Institute of Security Studies, shared his expertise on evidence-based policing.

Namibian Police officers also participated and shared their experience.

Dr Faul spoke about how police use stories and shortcuts to understand the social world, themselves, and their work; how policing is historically narrative driven; and how policing is a powerful generator of stories, both for policing and society as a whole.

There was a lively discussion as the attendees got a chance to ask Dr Faul and the police questions after their presentations.
