Van konfrontasie tot konsternasie
Met die aankondiging in 2019 en 2020 van kiesuitslae wat nuwe lewe in Namibië se demokrasie kan blaas, het Republikein die belang van samewerking tot almal se voordeel beklemtoon en teen verdelende konfrontasie gewaarsku.
Die oproer tydens die staatsrede verlede week is nie goed vir ons demokrasie nie.
Hoewel 'n afkoelperiode, deur middel van skorsing, partye soms kan help om mekaar te vind, sal die onnodige uitrek van die onderonsie ook niemand help nie.
Ondanks wyd uiteenlopende sienings is daar altyd 'n goue middeweg – as partye dit wil vind. Onwilligheid hou groot gevare en skade in, vir almal.
Leiers van die Landless People's Movement (LPM) se optrede weerspieël dalk sommige burgers se keelvolheid. Ons voel tog die verset kan steeds respekvol onder woorde gebring word.
Een van die LPM se argumente is dat Swapo se jarelange, ontwykende stoomrollerpolitiek en speakers se getroue onderskraging daarvan die krisis gebaar het. 'n Mate van selfondersoek is egter ook nodig, en goed.
Die bal is nou tot Maandag voortgedribbel deur die komitee vir reëls se verwysing van die Speaker se bevel teen mnre. Bernadus Swartbooi en Henny Seibeb na die komitee vir privilegies en immuniteit.
Intussen is die LPM op pad hof toe met die argument dat die Speaker lankal die lede onder ander reëls die huis kon belet het eerder as om nou beweerde “buitengewone omstandighede” aan te voer. Dit kan interessante regsargumente tot gevolg hê.
Vir baie skeel dit waarskynlik min. Namibië benodig wetgewers wat ons land sal opbou.

Only transparency can bring sustained change
The powerful trial and conviction of former officer Derek Chauvin for the sadistic murder of George Floyd brought much more than accountability to the nation on Tuesday, it brought certain change.
From May 25, 2020, the murder of Floyd has been a textbook illustration of police unaccountability. That ended after unparalleled scrutiny and a three-week trial changed the expectation for police officers everywhere.
The world knows exactly what happened to Floyd. And the world watched.
Tens of thousands of police officers across the country saw the end of the so-called “blue wall,” where police defend each other with their silence or tacit perjury.
Police cannot be the sole source of information about allegations of police wrongdoing.
It doesn't mean that the vast majority of officers and police departments aren't staffed with skilled, honest and compassionate people. It means those honorable peacekeepers need and deserve police reform as much as the public they serve.
The Floyd trial was only the opening of a conversation every police department in the country needs to have about not just changing the structure of departments and the behavior of officers, but how to ensure the public they're getting the truth.
