Usaid donates books to schools
The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture on Thursday received 36 500 storybooks worth over N$3.9 million from the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid).
The books for children, donated under the theme “Bridging the Gap”, will be distributed to a selection of schools in all 14 regions, as well as to one community library and three regional study and resource centres.
In a speech read on her behalf, Deputy Education Minister Anna Nghipondoka noted that school libraries exist within the framework of local, regional and national authorities to provide the opportunity for learning.
To maintain and continuously respond to an evolving educational and cultural environment, schools' libraries need to be supported by the legislation and sustained funding.
“Acquisition of reading materials for school and community libraries is one of the greatest challenges we have in the ministry,” said Nghipondoka, adding teachers and principals have a duty to take care of the tools vital for enhancing literacy in Namibia.
US Ambassador to Namibia, Thomas Daughton, said they donated the books to nurture and support a culture of reading, to increase access to library books for learners and to give learners the chance to participate in this year's annual National Read-a-Thon, scheduled for September.

“To achieve that, Usaid, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and Peace Corps Namibia, carefully selected the 47 schools and four libraries to receive culturally- and age-appropriate books for primary and secondary school children across the country,” said Daughton.
He noted research has shown that reading books from an early age equips children with the vocabulary to communicate at higher levels and to excel in problem solving.
