Unemployed Grootfontein residents desperate for land

More than 5 000 residents of Grootfontein in need of housing, the majority of whom are from the informal areas, have applied for the 1 120 serviced plots at the town since last week Wednesday.The mass application of plots at the town follows a meeting which took place on 26 September 2020 at the Kap en Bou informal area attended by Otjozondjupa Region governor, James Uerikua, residents and the local authority councillors of the municipality.The meeting was necessitated by a decision which was made by the Grootfontein Municipality and the Otjozondjupa governor to allow residents of the town in need of residential plots to apply for all the serviced plots, about 1 120 plots at the town’s Extensions 6, 7, and 8 residential areas.The application process kicked off last Wednesday morning at the Omulunga municipality satellite office.Chairperson of the Grootfontein Municipality’s management committee, Jack Tsanigab said over 5 000 application forms have been received since last Wednesday, and they are classified into two groups of employed and unemployed applicants.“We classified them like that since all of them qualify, and we want to capture this information on our database system for future housing needs and planning purposes,” he said.UnemploymentTsanigab said most of the applicants are from the Kap en Bou informal areas who are unemployed. The application process has no deadline, he said.Tsanigab stated that the municipality is still contemplating to put some of the affluent plots on sale to the employed applicants at affordable prices, and resettle the unemployed applicants on serviced plots and issued with ownership certificates.“The resettled residents will be expected to pay rates and taxes on their plots so that the money generated is used to service more residential plots for others,” said Tsanigab.He however urged residents to refrain from grabbing town land, saying this stifles the municipality land development and servicing plans. - Nampa
