Another bonus-point win by FNB University of Namibia consolidated their status as log leaders of the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) premier league at the halfway stage of the season.
The student team comprehensively overcame a brave effort by FNB Rehoboth Rugby Club to win by 38-20, after leading 26-15 at halftime.
Unam already scored their fourth try for a bonus point just before halftime and therefore the visitors’ achievement of preventing them from scoring a seventh try during the last 25 minutes showed the determined character of the Rehoboth side.
Rehoboth opened the scoring with a Henrique Olivier penalty after just two minutes, when the flyhalf was pulled back from following up on a high pass that went over the head of his opposite number Delron Brandt.
Unam went on the attack early and earned a five-metre scrum feed, from which Rehoboth Nr 8 Cameron McNab was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on Unam scrumhalf Sunday Haitembu.
From the ensuing pressure, prop Graham April scored Unam’s first try, converted by Brandt.
McNab returned from his yellow card to find Rehoboth on the attack following a determined run by flank Boris Majiedt and wing Jaden Bussel, which led to a lineout feed on the UNAM try line from which McNab barged over to score in the corner. Olivier could not convert, but Rehoboth led 8-7.
After half an hour, Sunday Haitembu made a clean break from a lineout on his own goal line to the halfway line. From the next phase, Brandt sent a cross-field grubber to right wing Shareave Titus, with fullback Chad Plato scoring off his inside pass. Brandt landed the touchline conversion (14-8).
Rehoboth showed opportunism to work wing Jaden Bussel over under the posts off a turnover, with Olivier’s kick putting them ahead again (15-14).
Unam responded with setting up phases off an attacking lineout, before Brandt sent a long pass to the right wing Shareave Titus to round off in the corner for a converted try.
Unam never yielded the lead again, scoring their fourth try through flank Cameron Langenhoven breaking off a maul just before halftime (26-15).
Unam’s two tries in the second half was scored by hooker Shaun van Wyk, off a lineout maul, followed by an opportunistic penalty tap and run from within his own 22 area by Chad Plato to go score at the other end.
Rehoboth flyhalf Henrique Olivier caught his former teammates asleep when he similarly scored off a tap penalty near the goal line, but could not convert to finish at 38-20.
Unam still finished under pressure on their own line in the final minutes, with Langenhoven and wing Oderich Mouton earning yellow cards for professional fouls.
• Saturday’s other results: FNB Grootfontein 26-29 FNB Wanderers; FNB Kudus 29-26 FNB Reho Falcon.
