Mining is an important source of business for many Namibian companies such as Ultra Scales Windhoek cc.

According to part owner CornéVisser, this family business survives the harsh Namibian business environment thanks to a shared passion for their specialised industry and exceptional service. “I think our success was born from that,” he said.

Ultra Scales Windhoek cc and Ultra Scales cc in Walvis Bay supplies equipment to almost all the mines in Namibia.

Among their equipment, to name a few, are weighbridges, belt weighers, weigh feeders, through-put weighers, industrial platforms as well as loader and excavator weighing systems. They also supply and service lab balances, industrial weighing, retail weighing and special weighing.

They keep in contact with mines and other clients by maintaining good communication with respective departments such as engineering and instrumentation, receiving and dispatch. “We strive to stay professional and I believe the rest will follow,” said Visser.

Like the Namibian mining industry in general, Ultra Scales was hard hit by the global economic meltdown and associated drop in mineral prices on international markets. “We felt it, for sure! Cash is tight and all projects were put on hold, even day to day maintenance was cut in half,” he says. Despite these conditions the company has stuck it out through self-reliance and a die-hard attitude.

Ultra Scales service their clients from two branches; one in Windhoek named Ultra Scales Windhoek cc and the other in Walvis Bay named Ultra Scales cc. “We cart our own equipment and we have our own test truck with a crane and test weights, the same one we use to test our weighbridges,” Visser said.

The business was started by his uncle Leon Badenhorst who founded the Walvis Bay branch and is an equal partner in the Windhoek based business. In 1992 Leon opened Ultra Scales cc for business,” Visser recalls.

With a resurgence in commodity prices widely expected, and Namibian mining having survived the financial storm of the last few years better than most, the future looks from for Ultra Scales. Clients and customers around the country can be sure of one thing, regardless of the circumstances this family business will stay in the running thanks to their well measured approach.
