Dear Mr. President
When you locked down Namibia in March 2020 due to Covid-19, we as citizens honoured your decision and stayed home even though the numbers were below 10 positive cases. We adhered when you extended the lockdown due to a few more cases.
Today we are in lockdown for nearly three months. We have 39 cases of Covid-19 (at the time of writing). If I interpret the information correctly, we have no deaths. Many cases healed, are being monitored and/or are asymptomatic positives.
Surely this country cannot shut down every time someone tests positive. At some point we will have to bravely return to normal and live with the risk of a dangerous virus like we did before Covid.
Worldwide scientific data now shows that lockdowns were not the best route to go. It also shows that people with underlying conditions and old people are the most vulnerable. Take care of them and let the healthy continue with their lives.
At this moment the negative side-effects of the lockdown outweigh the virus itself. We cannot stop living because we fear risks.
As a freedom fighter you understand better than me that we sometimes need to face risks and danger to fulfill a purpose. We cannot let a nation die of hunger and poverty because of Covid.
This beautiful country needs to open up so that all its citizens can make an honorable living. Those who are afraid can stay home ad infinitum. It is their choice. Just allow the rest of us to look life in the eye and rebuild this country that has withered to near death in the last few months.
Covid, like all viruses and illnesses, will forever be part of our future. Let us deal with it as we always dealt with illness.
Never before has the illness of one person imprisoned a country or the world. Worldwide lockdowns was a reflexive action in the face of an unknown threat. Today there is more data available and we need to set emotions aside and make scientific, reasonable decisions.
So I beg of you, Mr President: please be courageous and open up our businesses and schools so that we all can go back to normality.
PS. If I get the virus, I will deal with it myself and I will not hold you responsible.
