The Zoo Story

Mandy Rittmann
MRS. K WOERMANN WRITES:

Unfortunately it is not for the very first time that Aldo Behrens offers a play which the people of Swakopmund do not feel to honour or at least not show their interest. Therefore please allow me, to raise some thoughts.

I guess, it's not due to advertising. The two artists, Joseph Molapong, he represents the typical cool middle class family father, and David Ndjavera, a Herero residing in one room in the very outskirts of town, couldn't be better.

Aldo Behrens with his so called “laboratory theatre” tries just to challenge us.

To wake us up in our very cosy atmosphere, especially in our beautiful Namibia, in the whole of Africa and of course the whole of the so called civilised world. Maybe it's difficult for many of us, to follow the fine details of the Afrikaans language. But I am convinced if we try carefully to listen we might one day contribute to a better world even if it's only in and around our direct environment.

It might be, Aldo that the timing of such sort of theatre is wrong, especially in the X-mas rush and holiday mood. Most of the people want “Brot und Spiele”.

There is too much on at this time of the year in Swakopmund.

I think once again, no I beg you: Why not join forces with the Kunstverein and Bank Windhoek once again? Give us something in the “dry season”. Help us, the public, to understand and discuss the play like you did in Windhoek about 20 years ago. The people will honour it.
