The tough time of examinations

Thelma Savanhu Exam time is fast approaching and the grade 12 and grade 11 learners will start with their examination in two weeks’ time.It is normal to feel a bit worried about exams, especially if you’re under pressure from school or from your family.Sometimes that pressure can cause stress. Stress is your response to pressure and while a small amount of stress can be useful to keep you focused, it can become too much and study can seem impossible. While exam stress is inevitable, here are some tips to help you cope:Plan: Draw up a timetable or mind map of allocated time slots to spend on each subject and stick to it. Be realistic about how much you can study when allocating your time.Study group: Try finding a study group or create your own. Working through problems with other students can be a way to keep your social life going and boost morale.Be creative: Instead of trying to memorise boring notes, try spicing it up and doing something fun. You can make flash cards or mind maps. You can even write a song; we can memorise an entire Chris Brown album but can’t seem to remember any element on the periodic table, so writing a song might just help.Take regular breaks: Our brain doesn’t work well when we are tired and revision can be exhausting. Make sure you take a break every hour for ten minutes to have a snack or take a nap. Power napping is proven to increase productivity, so try it!Stay healthy: Don’t skip meals because you will need the stamina. Take a few minutes of exercise too. Exams are important to assess your progress and the results are especially important if you want to apply for university. But keep in mind that exams don’t define who you are.
