The Smart City needs your support

LYDIA AMUTENYA, CITY OF WINDHOEK SECTION HEAD: CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS WRITES:I am writing to respond to SMSs that appeared on page 6 of the Republikein edition 30 July 2020 about 5G.The City of Windhoek did not apply for a 5G license, but a Class Comprehensive Telecommunications Services Licence which was granted by CRAN. This license will allow us to implement our fibre monetization project that has immense benefits to all our residents once implemented.The city through its electricity department has laid down a fibre optic cable network infrastructure of over 120 kilometers across the city with the main objective of servicing and monitoring its electricity load and distribution stations. This is the existing network that we want to commercialise for the following benefits, amongst others: smart metering, improved public transportation, water management to monitor our water network and identify leaks, introducing a smart wheelie-bin system to detect when rubbish bins need to be emptied, to promote energy efficiency and regulations, reduce crime, improve emergency response time, improve access to the internet in the City, monitor traffic flow, etc.The City of Windhoek has a vision of becoming a SMART and Caring City by 2022. This vision entails leveraging its core competencies, skills, and knowledge base to ensure that it becomes a sustainable smart city. The implementation of this project is expected to further improve the quality of life for all our people in the City, and thus it needs the support of all of us.
