The Labour Act explained
THE Labour Act, 2007 (Act No. 11 of 2007) is one of most significant statutes passed by Parliament and encompasses all sectors of the Namibian society, whether public or private.
The Act applies to vitually all employers and employees regardless of job category and seniority and it takes precedence over all other employment related legislation, the common law and contractual instruments.
As such the Labour Act, 2007 exerts a fundamental influence on most people?s lives, since it largely determines the parameters of their livelihood anchored in the workplace. With this in mind a book, Namibian Labour Lexicon Volume 2 (Revised Edition) The Labour Act, 2007 A to Z, was recently launched.
It was compiled by dr. Johann van Rooyen and the publication of the book was made possible with the financial support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Dr. Van Rooyen compiled the book as an implementation aid for the multitude of persons and organisastions affected by the Act, be they employers or employees, public servants, trade unions or employers? organisations.
In this edition of the Namibian Labour Lexicon Volume 2, the Labour Act, 2007 has been comprehensively summarised in narrativ eprose style and numerous summarised sections are followed by boxes of explanatory discussion and commentary on the preceding provisions.
These inserts give valuable contextual background to facilitate understanding and highlight important aspects. Some of them, depending on the scope, such as the discussions on arbitrations, collective bargaining and regulations cover several pages of the book.
The book was officially launched by the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Mr. Immanuel Ngatjizeko, and it is available at the bookshops and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
