The Honda African Twin Quest True Adventure kicked off in a flurry of activity yesterday, when the 20 eager finalists and the team from Specialized Adventures converged at Pupkewitz Honda in Windhoek.

Steely-eyed, excited and nervous, the contestants struggled to hide their anticipation as they got on their game faces for the epic adventure they were about to embark on. With their bikes packed up and ready to go, you could smell wanderlust filling the air.

“The last time I was this nervous, was the night before my wedding,” said Gerrit Visser from Upington.

“Ever since I came to my senses, I've been crazy about bikes and enduro riding, so this is an absolute dream come true,” he said. “The Kaokoland and Damaraland are both bucket-list rides for any rider and getting to do it with a great squad of competitors and a bucket-list bike like the African Twin is really something special,” he added.

The next two weeks will see competitors battle and bond across some of the most challenging terrain in Namibia, putting both them, their bikes and bodies to the extreme over 2 500 km.

“It's really great that Honda, in a time when many manufacturers are leaving our local shores, choose to forge ahead and put their money where their mouths are to make an adventure this epic possible,” said Hardy de Kock, owner of Specialized Adventures, the renowned team facilitating the Quest.

“While they are going to experience some of the most spectacular places Namibia has to offer, they will also be exposed to some of its harshest and most challenging. Thankfully, the Honda African Twin is the prefect motorcycle for the job. It's rugged, reliable and versatile, so we're sure the excellent team of experienced riders we have will have an experience they won't soon forget,” he added.

As they set off, I was reminded of something Visser had said earlier.

“I've always been a fan of Honda and this latest African Twin takes me right back to when I was a child and it was the weapon of choice in the Dakar Rally.”

“This customer-centered approach, matched with their passion for keeping the legacy of untamed adventure that was borne with the first African Twin, alive, makes Honda a unique and trusted player in the market and the hearts of riders,” he said.

The Honda African Twin Quest True Adventure competitors will return to Windhoek in two weeks, when the winners will be announced and receive the keys to the trusty steeds that carried them to victory.
