The best in the west

Erongo has always been known as a region of excellence and the latest Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate High Level (NSSCH) and Ordinary Level (NSSCO) results were no exception.
Private School Swakopmund was once again the top performing private school in the region for the NSSCH. Only five candidates from the school sat for these exams.
Walvis Bay Private High School was the second best school in the NSSCH with 212 candidates who sat for these exams.
Duneside High School clinched third place, followed by Karibib Private School and Martin Luther High School in fifth place.
Among the public schools, Namib High School in Swakopmund once again clinched first place in the NSSCH exams. Out of 139 schools countrywide, it reached eight place.
De Duine Secondary School clinched second place, followed by Westside High School, Kuisebmond Secondary School, Kollin Foundation Secondary School, Duinesig Combined School and Coastal High School.
Namib High School was also the top performer of all the public and private schools in the region.

“We try to create a culture of care at the school. We try to create a culture where both learner and teacher feel safe and when we discipline, we discipline to correct the behaviour and not to punish.
“Each term we analyse the results and come up with a plan of action and ask ourselves what we can do to improve the results. Aside from the normal activities, such as afternoon and extra classes, both learner and teacher had the attitude: ‘Whatever it takes, by all means possible’.”
She said the grade 12 class of 2019 was a special class, and the school had no disciplinary problems with them.
“We showed that we wanted them and we loved having them here, which I believed contributed immensely to the excellent results.
“I truly felt like a proud mother when the results were announced. I could say that I was part of these results since I’m not only the principal but I teach grade 12 learners as well. I know how it feels when teachers have to deal with learners that don’t do homework, who procrastinate, giving extra classes when you can’t get to everything, extra classes on Saturdays and over the holidays.”
She said last year’s examination results would open more doors for Namib High School.
“A lot more people want to be part of the school now. Parents, learners and teachers all want to be involved at school, and want to teach at NHS. So naturally, you attract good parents, good learners and good teachers.”
