Team Namibia supports sustainable economic development
Team Namibia held its annual general meeting on 5th July 2017 under the theme "stimulating economic growth through the consumption of local products and services".
Team Namibia, with its ultimate goal of making significant contribution to Namibia’s sustainable economic development had invited the minister of economic planning and secretary general of the Namibia Planning Commission, Mr Tom Alweendo to address its members at the annual general meeting.
Welcoming the audience, chairman of the board of Team Namibia, Mr Pieter Greeff said that Team Namibia contributes to inclusive sustainable economic development by advocating the creation of local markets for locally produced goods and services. As such the member-based national organisation collaborates in the efforts of employment creation, the generation of income and ultimately in the permanent reduction of poverty.
Greeff emphasised procurement practices in Namibia needed to be changed. He said: “We believe that if we increase the level of local demand through effective procurement practices, we can increase our own production capacities. We then can invest in continued improvement to reach optimal standards and quantities needed to compete locally, regionally and internationally”.
Alweendo applauded the efforts of Team Namibia and its members. He encouraged the audience to further build strong alliances and partnerships where everyone contributes to ensuring a significant change in the economy of Namibia. He also motivated businesses for the private sector, the public sector and society to work as a team to obtain the goals and objectives of Vision 2030, which will ultimately enable Namibia to reach major economic milestones.
Alweendo urged Team Namibia members to be determined even during challenges and emboldened the audience by saying: “Vision 2030 is going to be achieved by all of us, because together as a team we are stronger.
“We all have a role to play, the difference between what is possible and what is impossible is only the determination we have. We can do what needs to be done, we have proven that we can do what needs to be done to solve challenges we have faced in the past therefore let us build on the achievements we have reached and move forward”.
The event was held at the Namibia University of Science and Technology Hotel School on 5th July 2017 and also hosted an interactive networking session where Team Namibia service providers had the opportunity to exhibit their services to the attendants of the annual general meeting. The members approved the appointment of Elzita Beukes, FNB Group Communications Manager, in the Marketing and Communications team of FNB, and Jan Coetzee, who is the founder and managing director of Headway Consulting as new directors of the 13-member board for the organisation.
Team Namibia also shared its new high level strategic focus, which will predominantly focus on the opportunities it will leverage on for its members as well as the goals that the organisation hopes to achieve under its three-fold focused initiatives of: stimulating consumer confidence, inspiring competitive standards and impacting economic sustainability.
The organisation also focuses on supporting the development of entrepreneurship and further enhancing the capacities of small to medium sized enterprises, in view of sustainable economic development and growth. With this in mind, Team Namibia received the approval of funding from Embassy of Finland for the training and mentoring of SME’s in Katutura. In December and January, Team Namibia’s efforts were focused on raising awareness of the initiative and mobilising beneficiaries. Over 400 applications to participate in the programme were received. Interviews to select the Top 25 will commence during the first week of August 2017.
