Suburbs lose to Sishen in Gold Cup
Namibia's Western Suburbs lost 26-29 to IMT Sishen in a closely contested Gold Cup Rugby match played in Windhoek on Saturday.
Playing in the competition for the first time this year, the Namibia club side scored four tries in the second half, converting three of the tries.
Trailing by 12 points to nil at half-time, the Namibians upped their tempo and opened the scoring in the second half through Elliot Lombart two minutes after the restart.
Justin Nel converted.
Philippus Theunis van Staden Pretorius added five more points for Sishen before Suburbs' Gino Wilson scored a sole try, having ran the full length of the field, with Nel converting.
Darryl de la Harpe capitalised on poor defending by the South Africans to put Suburbs within touching distance of their opponents before Sishen tight head prop Louwrens Strydom scored a converted try 10 minutes before the end of the game.
Suburbs then scored through Roderique Victor and Nel converted to set a nail biting finish to the match as Suburbs pushed for their first victory in this year's competition.
Sishen defended the lead and emerged victorious with a score line of 29 points to 26 in favour of the visitors.
Suburbs coach Shaun Kaizembi said starting slow cost them the game.
“I told the boys to play from minute one. We lost the game in the first half. We wasted four to five tries, but we are learning with each game,” he said.
He said they will work on their weaknesses with the hope of winning their last match, which they will play in South Africa.
Sishen coach Riaan van Straten said his Upington-based side deserved to win but paid tribute to his opponents, saying they used their home advantage and conditions to their advantage.
“It is a bittersweet victory for us as we travelled 1 200 kilometres in a bus, and we played under extremely hot conditions. I am happy with the result. Suburbs used the home advantage to stretch us,” he said.
