When and why did you decide to become a teacher?In school already. I loved certain teachers and subjects and knew I wanted to be the one who makes a difference in children’s lives. I wanted to be the one the learners remembered as the one who had an impact on their future.What is the best part about being a teacher?The best part of being a teacher is having the chance to be a kid yourself sometimes. The learners love it when we play sports with them and learn with them. Being a mentor does not only mean to be better than them, but also showing them that you’re also a person and also make mistakes. Can you tell us of your journey towards becoming a teacher? I knew that being a teacher you have to have a balanced life. A teacher is an all-rounder. While studying, I took on life with everything. A teacher needs to be an experienced person, that’s why I took on all the opportunities to grow and develop my people skills. What has been the highlight of your teaching career thus far?I think it might just be taking the senior primary to Stolzenfeld Campsite for their leadership camp. Taking the learners out of the school environment surely helps a teacher understand each individual, their strengths and weaknesses. At this camp, they were tested to the best of their abilities. This was also bonding time with them; because of no work stress, they learnt about us as well and the people we are outside school. What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing in your spare time?I love exercising: Jogging, biking, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you name it! I think it is because this also show that you are capable of so much more than you think. In the winter, I also love doing things with my hands like knitting or crochet – something that is not so common under 23-year-olds. Cooking is also a hobby of mine I learnt from my mother, but I think it is because I love eating so much! What lessons have you learnt from your learners?Take on every opportunity that comes your way! At Roots Gymnasium, we try to create new challenges weekly and the learners are also interested and want to try everything!What is the one thing that keeps you going every day?God. He is my rock. To live close to Him is to live a full life. He guides you and leads you towards where He needs you.
