Mrs Descande is a grade 10, 11 and 12 English teacher at M&K Gertze High School.
What is the best part about being a teacher?
The ability to make a difference, shape minds and to lend a helping hand to the youth. As a teacher, I have to be an attentive listener in order to hear the silent cries of the learners and cater to their needs. I am extremely proud of the learners I have taught who pass my subject with good grades. In fact, they never fail English.
Why did you decide to be the coordinating teacher for the editorial team?
I am passionate about reading and writing. I want to inspire learners to read and write more, especially those who would like to pursue a career in journalism. In my free time, I write poems and school anthems. I read these poems to the learners to motivate them when they have to write their own poems and essays. Besides this, being part of the team is exciting and educative.
What advice would you give to learners who wish to one day become teachers?
Learners should be 100% sure if they would like to become teachers. They must not see it as a job, but rather passion should lead them into it. It is important to note that a teacher has many roles to fulfil. Amongst others, these roles require you to be a mentor, facilitator, educator, listener, advisor and counsellor.
A teacher requires a lot of patience and empathy, but most importantly, you must love working with children, keeping in mind that they all come from different backgrounds. You will have to make sacrifices and a resilient educator. Above all, you need to believe in the potential of the learners you teach.
What lessons have you learnt as a teacher?
Personal attention to learners can make a difference and bring significant changes. Last year I took up the challenge to teach higher level English for grade 12 learners and the results of working in the afternoons and over the weekends were seeing the learners pass with flying colours. They could easily brag about the fact that they made history being the first higher level English learners at M&K Gertze.
