St Paul's College's art 'break out' during lockdown
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought its pros and cons to our nation. However, during this period, St Paul's College students found their art being “an anchor of security in these uncertain times”.
Art has certainly saved many of our learners and ourselves from becoming depressed during this time. Shortly after lockdown, we continued with two online art examinations for grade 11 and 12 respectively.
Initially, we were hesitant to continue, however, our learners surprised us with their self-discipline and creativity.
Fortunately, we were able to communicate with them via WhatsApp comments and photos throughout the examination period. Many learners reported that it was a daunting thought at first, yet once they started, they felt at ease in the comfort of their homes.
Many learners felt that they had become more independent during this phase and that they found it to be an escape from reality as they were able to express their emotions through their artwork.
As Pablo Picasso so rightfully stated: “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
