SPYL's Sikongo hands over seeds and food parcels

The Covid-19 pandemic has taught Namibia not to rely on other countries for imports of food, but instead produce its own food, as those countries might close off their borders, leaving the country stranded.These remarks were made by Swapo party youth league (SPYL) deputy secretary Christine Haindaka-Sikongo on Saturday while handing over food parcels to the community of Otuzemba in the Kunene region as well as seeds for their garden project.Sikongo advised the community of Otuzemba and the entire Kunene in general, to utilize the water from the Kunene River and other natural reservoirs by building pipelines as well as drill boreholes for food production and ultimately grow the country’s economy while creating wealth and job opportunities for all Namibian youths.“Let’s utilize the little resources that we have by embracing the great idea which the community of Otuzemba has implemented as a leading practical work,” she said while applauding the community for the work on their garden.SustainabilitySikongo also assured her full support towards the sustainability of local food production and skills development among the youth adding that teamwork and dedication always yield good achievement.Also speaking at the ceremony, Swapo party district treasurer for Opuwo rural constituency Stein Katupa noted that the donations were for everyone as giving is the most humane thing to do and should be embraced.More than 112 households in Otuzemba and Otjitoko villages have benefited from the SPYL food parcels donations that consist of maize-meal, tinned fish, cooking oil, sugar beans and salt.The garden project received seeds for corn, cabbages and onions to help them boost their garden’s food production. - Nampa
