Solid start for Davis Cup team
Fourth seeded Namibia played their first Davis Cup tennis tie against Nigeria in Madagascar yesterday and won the battle 2-1 against very determined opposition.
They will face Morocco as first seeds of the tournament today, the non-playing captain and coach Johan Theron said.
Namibia’s number two player, Jean Erasmus, played against Albert Bikom, the number two player of Nigeria, and lost 6-2, 6-3 while Tuki Jacobs, Namibia’s number one, locked horns with his Nigerian counterpart Christian Paul and won 6-3, 6-4.
The doubles clash was the deciding match where Tuki Jacobs and Jean Erasmus played against Rotimi Akinloya and Sylvester Immanuel and won 6-3, 7-5. Therefore Namibia progressed with a 2-1 result from this tie.
“The team played very well and they have a very positive attitude. I am very proud of my team and their performance today,” Theron said.
The Namibian Davis Cup team also contains Deon van Dyk and Katu Jacobs.
The ten countries were placed into two groups, namely Group A: Morocco, Namibia, Mozambique, Cameroon, Nigeria. Group B: Algeria, Madagascar, Kenya, Botswana, Benin.
The countries were seeded as follows: 1 Morocco, 2 Algeria, 3 Benin, 4 Namibia, 5 Madagascar, 6 Mozambique, 7 Nigeria, 8 Botswana, 9 Cameroon, 10 Kenya.
“The Davis Cup team would like to thank the Namibian Tennis Association for making this tour possible and they will do their best to make Namibia proud,” Theron informed from Madagascar.
