The Namibia Hunting Rifle Shooting Association (NHRSA) hosted the International Test Shoot between its nationals teams and South Africa in the riverbeds at Lake Oanob Resort near Rehoboth last weekend.

Each country was represented by three teams – a national men's team, a President's team and, for the first time, a women's team.

The team event took place on Friday and Saturday as an open day competition, with a whopping 104 entries received.

The men's teams and their managers started the day after a briefing of the range and introduction to the range officers.

The ladies teams only started at 12:00, as the youngest ladies team member had to be flown in from Okahandja, because the NHRSA is proud to be known as a family sport and she had to finish her Grade 12 exams.

The wind interfered with the shooters' aim, the Namibian sun was hot and the range was interestingly challenging. On Saturday the teams were split up and could shoot in any squad they prefer; the individual scores were added together with the team score of the previous day to get a grand total.

During the prize-giving the individual winners and the winning teams were announced:

Penkoppe: 1 Xander van Rooyen; 2 Joubert Engelbrecht; 3 Christo van Rooyen.

Juniors: 1 Kean Redelinghuys; 2 Alex Opperman; 3 Gideon Agenbag.

Veterans: 1 JP Human; 2 J Farnham (SA).

Seniors: 1 P Breedt (RSA); 2 A Volschenk (RSA); 3 B Verster (RSA).

Ladies: 1 A Butler (RSA); 2 E vd Heever (RSA); 3 Cornel vd Westhuizen.

Men: 1 S van Wyk (RSA); 2 Worsie Marais; 3 J Nezar (RSA).

Namibian Gold Class: 1 Worsie Marais; 2 Johan Engelbrecht; 3 Nickie Marais.

Namibian Silver Class: 1 Johan Wessels; 2 Ferdie Schnaitmann; Willie Langford.

Namibian Bronze Class: 1 Gertjan Coetzee; 2 Xander van Rooyen; 3 Ian Redelinghuys.

Teams: South Africa took gold in all three categories.

The competition was an awesome experience and visitors again saw why Namibia and Namibian people are complimented for their hospitality and friendliness.

The organisers expressed their thanks to the sponsors for their generous contributions towards the sport – Advanced Medical Services, Walmaine Game Breeders, Pupkewitz Megatech (main sponsor of the national women's team), Afro Pumps, Lana Dry Cleaners, Ombiliha Meat Centre, FNB, Vobaco Pharmacy, Outdoor Centre, Rico Tactical Sport, Nimue and Mr Piet Breedt.

Gratitude was also expressed to the staff of Lake Oanob Resort and Mr Benade for their friendliness, Sonja Steenkamp for the beautiful photos, John Matthee from SA and his team for the building of the two ranges, Wathy van der Wath for the water and each and every other person who assisted in whatever way to make this weekend a huge success.

The NHRSA's final competition for the year will be on 11 November in Stampriet.
