Know-how and technology allow for quick turnaround times

Witt Engineering is about precision in a world of superlatives.
Huge machines, mega operations and gigantic endeavours often rely on the difference of inches, the finest of calculations and the smallest of margins, but at Witt Engineering, they make it so.
Owner Michael Witt is especially proud of his company’s achievement in manufacturing one of the largest hydraulic cylinders in the country, “to 100%,” as he puts it.
Using computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining equipment and a range of skillsets from hydraulic specialists and CNC programmers to mechanical and manufacturing engineering management, his 10-man workforce has grown in capacity over the 11 years since he started the company to service mines, quarries, earth-moving companies, brewers and bottling companies with competent ease.
“I don’t know if everyone knows what we can do, or the size of our place, though we do have a reputation for high-quality service,” he said with a smile.
Leaders of the pack
In-house at the 1 200m² facility, fully automated multi axis CNC machinery, manual lathes, a 30 000 NM torque converter with 13m length capacity and a semi-automatic honing machine capable of edging up to a diameter of 750 x 8 metres makes Witt Engineering one of the leading repair shops in the country.
They are also able to test the quality of cylinders by applying pressure up to 700 bar, preventing devastating cracks due to sub-quality manufacture, and in their stripping bay, anything, once turned, can be made to come right off on command.
Witt completed an apprenticeship in Germany and worked in both Munich and London, gaining more than 12 years’ experience in CNC machining and related engineering before setting up shop in Windhoek.
‘Started from scratch’
Witt Engineering originally operated from 150m² premises.
“I started from scratch 11 years ago upon returning from England,” he recalled. Today, the family-owned business has grown significantly based on a singular philosophy: “At Witt Engineering, we value the client as the most important stakeholder in our business. All our efforts and inputs are aligned to make the clients' service experience exceptional. We aim to manufacture products to the very highest standard and to comply with strict deadlines, whilst ensuring competitive pricing through effective sourcing and efficient working practices”.
This approach has also allowed Witt Engineering to navigate the outbreak of Covid-19, which dominates daily business in Namibia at present.
“The outbreak of Covid-19 has not really affected us due to the fact that everything is manufactured in-house, in Namibia. Large stockholding enables us to react quickly to the needs of our customers. Quick turn-around is crucial in hydraulics as downtime of machinery is costly in the mining and earth-moving field,” he added.
Witt Engineering manufactures quality milled, including 3D, and turned products to exact standards and with minute tolerances, pre-production samples, high-volume samples, prototypes and moulds.
