Ester KamatiDuring the lockdown period in Copenhagen, Denmark, Landuleni Fäldt Wahengo started brainstorming ideas for earning money. “Children my age here in Denmark usually babysit, mow lawns, walk dogs or deliver newspapers for pocket money. I did some more research and landed on entrepreneurship,” says the 13-year-old.Born in Namibia and raised in Sweden, Landuleni is the daughter of Namibian musical gem Jackson Wahengo and Julia Fäldt Wahengo. At the age of one, her family moved to Switzerland, the birthplace of her eight-year-old brother, Ivar. They stayed there for about eight years before moving to Denmark when Landuleni’s mother got a new job.Landuleni loves learning new languages. She attends an international Danish school where they are taught in English but learn Danish and German too. This adds to the list of languages that she speaks, which are Swedish, Oshikwanyama, and French. She also developed a keen interest in and spends time studying the Korean and Japanese cultures and recently took a keen interest in entrepreneurship. “I have this idea that I want to be financially stable in the future, to be economically independent, and entrepreneurship seems like a more solid thing to do and I thought that if I make money from a small business then I could start to invest it later and build up capital for the future.”Through research, Landuleni found that many people in the United States and the United Kingdom established brands ranging from hair care to lip gloss and jewellery, which they developed from home. She then researched how to make all of these and was intrigued by the idea of mixing different ingredients and colours to make lip gloss.She then went on to research ingredients and other supplies needed to make lip gloss, along with quality assurance measures. Thinking of the venture as a “fun way of earning money and something that would also look good and be an asset later on my college entrance essays and resume,” the young entrepreneur then began her production process, using her savings to order the necessary supplies online.Cruelty freeLanduleni wanted to make her brand inclusive and added that plant-based ingredients are better for the climate as using animal-derived ingredients have a bigger carbon footprint. “I really wanted to have a product that was truly for everyone, that everybody who liked could use, and therefore it had to be vegan and cruelty free, as well as affordable.” She plans to invest and develop a wider range of products and is interested in using natural products from Namibia such as marula oil, which she uses for her hair and skin. “I would love to explore using products from home, from Namibia, as we have a wealth of good oils, like the marula, Ximena and so on.” AspirationsShe spends her free time singing, playing guitar or piano, dancing and writing poems, stories and songs. She is also an avid reader who enjoys classical literature and young adult fiction, and practises a type of self-defence called Krav Maga after school.Landuleni has been making music with her father since she was born and hopes to become a performer. She likes expressing her emotions through the arts and would like to sing, dance, play guitar or do aerial acrobatics. “I also enjoy this entrepreneurship way of thinking and believe I will continue building a business and trying different things out.”With the current venture, she would also like to explore the variety of items she can make, from lip scrubs to lip oils, lip balms, lip masks and lipsticks. “People not believing in me motivates me, because I know that I can prove them wrong and myself right,” she says. She is further driven by the satisfaction that comes with going after her dreams and achieving them. That, along with the knowledge that if she carries on, she will slowly but surely see her business grow and reach a point of financial independence.
