SDFN houses at Kalkfeld nearing completion
Members stand to receive a one-bedroom house with a bathroom and open plan kitchen each for less than N$33 000.
KALKFELD – The construction of 18 houses by the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) is nearing completion at the Kalkfeld settlement in the Otjozondjupa region.
Kalkfeld SDFN facilitator, Mariane Kasamane, on Thursday told Nampa in an interview that they started construction on 36 erven allocated to members in January this year and that 18 houses are up to roof level.
“We are happy with the speed at which we are moving. It is taking us less than seven days to build a house, starting from the foundation,” she said.
Kasamane said 95 erven have been serviced on a piece of land at Ondundu-yo-vitenda north of Kalkfeld for the federation members.
Erven have been allocated to 57 members, out of which construction on the 36 houses has started.
The remaining 38 erven are reserved for new members joining the federation.
Kasamane urged residents of Kalkfeld to join the federation and benefit from the initiative, explaining that all that is required to sign up is a payment of N$800 and active participation in the SDFN’s weekly meetings.

Process
The members manufacture the bricks themselves, buy building materials with the pool money and also assist in cooking for those involved in building the houses.
Kasamane said the federation acquired the unserviced land from the Otjozondjupa Regional Council for free in 2016 and some of its more experienced members serviced the land.
One of the beneficiaries, the 36-year-old Theresia Haimbodi, said she was happy to see her house reaching roof level.
“I will soon move into this house I built myself,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Anna Heita, 31, said her house was built in about two days and on the third day, the zinc sheets for the roof were added.
“This is a dream come true for me to have a house. I really want to thank our constituency councillor, Julius Neumbo, who has been with us since day one,” Heita said.
