Salute, Kalakoda sign agreement
Local boxing stable Salute Boxing Academy joins hands with South African stable Kalakoda Promotions in order to expose boxers to a global market.
Salute Boxing Academy (SBA) and Kalakoda Promotions on Thursday signed an agreement to work together to promote Namibian boxers for the next three years.
The agreement was signed at Hilton hotel during a media briefing during which they also announced their first project: a boxing tournament scheduled for 29 December at the Dome in Swakopmund.
Kiriata Kamanya from SBA said the partnership will expose boxers under his stable to a global audience, which means they will be able to draw top class opponents. Kalakoda Promotions is an internationally licensed boxing promotions company based in Cape Town, South Africa.
The company's marketing director Jeremy Bean said they aim to do between four to six events annually with SBA.
“All these shows will be broadcasted on ESPN/Kwesé Sports in 39 countries with over 70 million viewers. We want to use boxing as a vehicle to push the brand Namibia,” he said.
Bean added that the shows will be packaged in such a way that there will be music, culture and fashion, which will also allow Namibian artists in these fields to a wider audience.
Steve Kalakoda, the founder of Kalakoda Promotions, was full of praise for Namibian boxers and their achievements, alluding to the fact that a country with such a small population can produce so many world champions.
“We have recognised the talent in this country and we want to show the world what Namibia has to offer in boxing. This agreement will benefit the boxers more than anybody else involved in the deal,” he said.
Kalakoda added that they had met various corporate companies, officials from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, and the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board who have committed themselves to working hard in using sports to promote unity and peace while fighting social ills such as gender-based violence.
Bethuel 'Tyson' Uushona, World Boxing Federation welterweight champion, said this is what the sport needed and they will use the opportunities to take their careers to another level.
“Fighters must now put their efforts into fighting as management has done their job in securing this deal which will make sure that our fights are broadcasted worldwide,” he said.
The financial details of the three-year deal were not disclosed, but an indication from the two camps is that they will look at renewing the deal within two years if everything goes as planned. The deal will also see Kalakoda Promotions producing an exclusive Namibia boxing television show, which will showcase Namibian culture through fashion, music and food.
