SAGES raise N$180k for charities

The SAGES Windhoek community of senior golfers older than 50 celebrated its fifth anniversary of the SAGES fundraiser, and again the sponsors, participants and helpers ensured it was a huge success.
It all started in 2015 when the SAGES Windhoek branch realised that more was to make a difference.
It was decided that a social golf tournament was the ideal platform to attract sponsors and players.
In 2015 the N$60 000 in proceeds were distributed to the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN).
In 2016 additional beneficiaries were added and the likes of the SPCA, Hope Orphan Centre, Save The Rhino Trust, old-age homes and others benefited from the N$96 000.
In 2017 and 2018, the proceeds of N$106 000 and N$153 000, respectively, were handed over to the nominated organisations.
SAGES’ members also enthusiastically got involved with the refurbishment and renovation of two old-age homes in Katutura and Pioneers Park.
With the launch of the 2019 SAGES fundraiser another idea came alive. It was decided that the recipients could become part of the event.
This sparked additional interest in this year’s effort and not surprisingly the proceeds for the year shot up to N$182 000 for distribution to the following beneficiaries: CAN, old-age homes, the SPCA, Hope Orphan Village, ISAP, Môreson Special School, Side by Side, Walvis Bay Huis Palms, Henties Bay Happy Land Kindergarten, Walvis Bay SPCA, Swakopmund Tears of Hope and Tsumeb Huis Maerua.
Rennies Travel Namibia also staged a chip-in competition during the golf event and pupils from the Môreson Special School also assisted in raising additional funds.
The title sponsors for this fundraising drive were BCX Namibia, Rennies Travel Namibia, Old Mutual and FlyWestair. These sponsors also attracted individuals and companies within their ecosystem to ensure that the SAGES community were in a position to maximise the return to the beneficiaries.
The Omeya and Windhoek gold clubs are also recognised as main stakeholders.
The SAGES community is extremely thankful for receiving such a positive response and is also proud of the N$600 000 distributed since 2015.
Other sponsors of the fundraising project in 2019 included Westcon, Tarsus, DB Space, Axiz, Drive Control, Gondwana, Onjala, Cape Town Fish Market, Bidvest Car Rental and Taeuber & Corssen, along with a number of others who sponsored holes, prizes or items for auctioning.
SAGES Senior Golfers is a golfing society for senior golfers.
Members of golf clubs who have reached the age of 50 are eligible to join their nearest branch. Branches in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Tsumeb, Okahandja, Gobabis and Henties Bay arrange tournaments at their golf clubs one or more times per month. SAGES enjoy the opportunity of fellowship with other senior golfers, and the opportunity to play with older golfers at different courses all over the country.
