Rising stars emerge at FNB Classic Clashes

Since its inception in 2008, the FNB Classic Clashes tournament has grown tremendously. With 48 schools competing in three major sport codes yearly, the tournament spans nine regions and provides a platform for athletes in soccer, rugby and netball to show off their skills.
In May 2020, the much-anticipated event is scheduled to kick off.
According to Gordon Pokolo, FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust’s sponsorships and promotions manager, a new element of engagement was added to the programme, through engaging not only those on the sports field, but the host schools through interviews with the principals, coaches and top-performing learners.
This was aimed at sharing successes among peers, in the form of academic, sport and personal accomplishments.
“Next year’s FNB Classic Clashes wish to continue with the same trend, because we believe there are so many beautiful stories out there that can inspire and encourage, not only the sportsmen and sportswomen, but also the scholar and the spectator.”
The tournament not only provides a platform for talented to develop, but also opportunities to be scouted by club coaches.
Pokolo said hopefully in the future successful sports star will be able to share how the FNB Classic Clashes helped propel to greater heights.
He emphasised the platform is for those who wish to establish themselves as sportsmen and sportswomen in the future, to show what they are capable of.
The tournament also has an important element of unity, as despite pitting rival schools against each other, there is always a high spirit among the pupils.
Pokolo gave thanks to the schools that participate in the tournament and also complimented them for their efforts to ensure that the Classic Clashes are played in good spirit and sportsmanship.
“We encourage them to continue creating such memorable experiences. At the end of each and every clash, despite the results, they are all winners.”
First National Bank (FNB), through the FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust, appreciates the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) for supporting the Classic Clashes since its inception.
“They are truly a valuable partner that FNB is proud to be associated with,” Pokolo added, while wishing the participating schools in 2020 all the best.
