RESPONSIBLE TOURISM AWARDS TAKE OFF
Following the launch of the Responsible Tourism Awards at the Namibia Tourism Expo held from 10 to 13 June this year, accommodation establishments and tour operators will soon be able to enter for these prestigious awards.
Prize money for the awards, which are presented under the banner of tourismus Namibia, totals N$1 million in editorial and advertorial support as well as N$50 000 in cash prizes in each of the two categories.
One of the entry requirements for the awards is that accommodation establishments and tourism operators must have received at least 4 Eco-Flowers from Eco Awards Namibia. New establishments and operators are, however, not excluded, but must arrange an assessment which must be completed before November 2015. Guidelines for the assessment can be obtained from Hazel Milne, the Programme Coordinator of Eco Awards Namibia at [email protected]
Criteria against which entrants will be judged include management, conservation, energy, water, waste and building and landscaping, as well as staff, social responsibility and legal compliance.
Eco Awards Namibia will draw up a shortlist of three finalists in each category and will undertake an intensive assessment , based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Certification Standard , by February next year. The selection of the three finalists will be completed by March and the winners will be announced at next year’s Namibia Tourism Expo (NTE) which is scheduled to take place from 18 to 21 May.
Entry forms can be collected in person from the Public Relations Department of Namibia Media Holdings, 11B General Murtala Muhammed Street, Eros, or can be accessed on the tourismus Namibia website (www. tourismus.com.na) .
The closing date for entries for the 2016 awards is 28 February 2016.
