Rail cargo transportation slipped into a decline

PHILLEPUS UUSIKU During June 2021, Namibia transported 975 708 tonnes of cargo through rail, road, air and sea, compared to 810 940 tonnes and 779 139 tonnes that were transported for May 2021 and June 2020, respectively.Given these developments, the composite cargo index that consists of the above-mentioned modes of transport recorded an increase on a monthly basis of 20.3% in June 2021 compared to a growth of 1.2% registered in May 2021. The index increased by 25.2%, year-on-year.According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the increase on monthly basis emanates from cargo transported through road, air and sea. However, rail cargo transportation slipped into a decline of 4.3%.The rail cargo index recorded a decline of 4.3% month-on-month compared to an increase of 9.7% registered in May 2021. Furthermore, the index posted a negative growth rate of 14.2%, year-on-year.The road cargo index registered a monthly increase of 7.5% in June 2021 compared to a negative growth of 27.8% recorded for May 2021. On the other hand, on an annual basis, the index picked up by recording a growth of 23.1% t from a reduction of 25.3% in June 2020, NSA pointed out. The air cargo index registered a monthly increase of 27.1% in June 2021 compared to a growth of 7.3% recorded for May 2021. Furthermore, on an annual basis, the index increased by recording a growth of 614.1% from a reduction of 83.9% in June 2020.SeaThe sea-cargo index that consists of sea-landed, sea-shipped and sea trans-shipped recorded a monthly growth rate of 36.5% month-on-month, further up from a growth of 35.5% registered in May 2021. Furthermore, the index increased by 40.0% year-on-year, NSA said.The sea-landed index recorded a growth rate of 50.4% month-on-month for June 2021. This is an improvement when compared to a growth of 45.7% recorded in the preceding month. Over the year, the index further increased, registering a growth of 91.1%.The increase observed monthly is mainly accredited to the high volumes for landing of bulk cargo for sulphur and wheat imported through the port of Walvis Bay, NSA pointed out.The sea-shipped Index registered a monthly growth rate of 21.5% in June 2021, a slowdown from a growth of 27.9% recorded in the preceding month. On annual terms, the sea-shipped index increased, recording a growth of 22.8%.The increase recorded on a monthly basis is mainly emanating from high volumes of bulk cargo of salt shipped through the port of Walvis Bay for the period ended 30 June 2021.The sea trans-shipped index, registered a monthly growth rate of 82.8% during the month under review, while a growth rate of 3.7% was recorded in May 2021. On an annual basis, the index declined by 72.0%.The increase recorded on monthly basis was mainly reflected in the high volumes of trans-shipment for containerized cargo of general equipment’s trans-shipped through the port of Walvis Bay, NSA said.
