PSUN rejects racial and political slants in labour matter
Victor Kazonyati, Secretary General of the Public Service Union of Namibia writes:
This note serves to refute some malicious misconceptions and falsehoods about the PSUN that appeared in the Republikein of 07 Thursday 2016, page 9.
In an sms clip an allegation was made that an unnamed person constantly writes negative stories “about Keetmanshoop Municipality” - “you mislead the workers in the name of the PSUN.”
The writer seems to insinuate or imply that the PSUN is run by "DPN (Nama Party)". We take very strong exception to such insinuation.
To start with, the PSUN is for all practical purposes run from its Head Office in Windhoek where its Chief Executive Officer – the Secretary General - does not even know the DPN or DNP nonsense – leave alone running things with or for it.
Secondly, those of us who have studied and aligned ourselves with principles of political non-affiliation of trade unions and their total independence as stipulated by the PSUN, have long seen the futility and moribund character of political affiliation and have dumped it for the trifling and utterly worthless travesty that it truly is. It pains us to imagine that there are still people living in this 21st century Space Age still unaware of such elementary realities.
The rank and file and leadership of the PSUN totally abhor tribalism of any kind and we work very hard to annihilate it from the body politic of our union and nation, hopefully.
The PSUN membership, if you should see and observe us all in our national events and offices exude the Namibian cultural diversity in all its magnificent dynamics imaginable.
The true facts about the situation at Keetmanshoop Municipality however, and which the writer of the sms clip does not want the world to know, are very simple and straight forward.
The majority of employees at the Keetmanshoop Municipality have resigned from NAPWU and joined the PSUN after many years of disappointment and a constant litany of shattered promises and broken hopes. These poor employees are totally frustrated and genuinely disillusioned with lack of proper service delivery and representation of their rights and interest as workers by their former unions.
The employees resigned from this union through the exercise of their free will as befitting a people who live in a democratic society and by rights granted them by the Namibian Constitution.
The Keetmanshoop Municipality in flagrant violation of these rights of the employees has refused, neglected or totally frustrated the granting of recognition to the PSUN - now the majority union to represent the employees – in keeping with the relevant provision of the Labour Act.
The PSUN has at no point attempted or even remotely tried to instigate the employees to engage in strike action or whatever industrial action as we are fully aware that this is not an issue over which they can legitimately strike.
In the circumstances the PSUN totally refutes and dismiss with the contempt it deserves the imputation that we dabble in political gimmickry to win over members to our union.
