Samora Soccer League chairman Mboma Kandjabanga has lauded Premier Sports Trading (PSTBET) for coming on board and supporting grassroots football.

Played deep in informal settlements between Havana and Goreangab on a gravel soccer filed, the league has been barely surviving due to a lack of sponsorship.

Many of the players hail from the settlements, living in harsh conditions without water and electricity.

Football is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel for many who play on the dusty field, using the game as a distraction from their often-hard lives.

Some have dreams of becoming top players, hoping it will elevate them out of a life of poverty and struggle.

“We would like to thank PSTBET for coming on board because we have really been struggling to get a sponsor for so long.

“This is something we appreciate as it can help many of these aspiring players to continue doing what they love, which is to play football,” Kandjabanga said.

Bringing hope

PSTBET co-founder Nelly Heita said they decided to sponsor the league to give the players hope.

“We have been driving past this area, and witnessing these guys play with so much commitment really touched our hearts.

“We felt the obligation to make sure that these players get that bit of motivation to continue playing.

“As a company, we hope that this league will at least produce players who can eventually play in the national team,” he said.

The betting company - which employs over 300 Namibians - in June sponsored Civics Football Club with N$550 000.

They are also involved with Namibia Media Holdings’ online Sport Wrap show, using the platform to reach out to those in need on a weekly basis.
