Promoting art, culture and heritage between Namibia and Cuba

Fanuel Shinedima The Cuban diplomatic mission in Namibia, under the leadership of ambassador Sidenio Acosta Aday, has signed an agreement with the minister of education, arts and culture, Anna Ester Nghipondoka. The agreement strives to promote cultural exchanges between Namibia and Cuba, taking advantage of each other’s strengths in the preservation, promotion and development of the arts, culture and heritage.Nghipondoka said the agreement is testimony to the two governments’ commitment to enhancing their relations.The cooperation is envisaged to be in the areas of cultural management, programming and skills training, as well as through exchanges aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and the promotion of diverse cultures.The minister said arts and culture played a pivotal role during both countries’ struggle for independence, as exemplified by revolutionary songs by Namibia’s Jackson Kaujeua, Cuba’s Silvio Rodriguez and many others. She believes that enhanced cooperation in the fields of arts, culture and heritage can inspire the two nations to overcome economic challenges such as youth unemployment, economic recession and the Covid-19 pandemic. She also believes that that Namibia and Cuba have immense talent that that they can nurture and develop so that their artists and cultural practitioners can earn income from their natural skills and contribute to the growth of the two nations’ economies. The minister thanked the Cuban authorities for taking care of over 250 Namibian students who are pursuing studies in medicine, veterinary science and other fields of study in Cuba.“We are confident that by the time they graduate, they will also become the necessary building blocks that are required to further enhance the cooperation between our two countries,” she said.
