Keetmanshoop-born Wharren Khrone started his own business from scratch who like other Keetmanshoop residents struggled in a harsh economic climate, says if it had not been for the passion he has for cooking, he wouldn't be a successful business owner today.

After completing school at PK De Villiers Secondary School, he moved on to do his Level three in Fitting and Turning at the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) in Keetmanshoop. He then pursued a career in the mining industry.

"I have always been very passionate about business and one day operating my own company and being a boss. I love a traditional braai and that mainly drove the vision," he says.

While working, Khrone says his colleagues trusted him the most when it came to making food. Furthermore, he appreciated the satisfaction and joy he saw from the people around him after they tasted his food.

"In the beginning, it was tough because I had to save for a long time to be able to have enough money for start-up capital. I also could not find a suitable place to set up shop," Krohne says.

Through several ups and downs, he further recalls how many people also had distorted views and opinions on kapana and the hygiene around it.

It took courage to keep convincing his customers and to sway their opinions.

"I overcame all of these struggles through believing in myself and my abilities and with the support and love from close family and friends," he says.

Just the beginning

Krohne has created a name for himself and quickly became a family favourite.

He advertises on social media sites such as Facebook and WhatsApp, where most of his customers engage with him.

"I remain encouraged and motivated by my loyal customers who call even when they know the business is closed," he says.

Krohne is further also motivated by knowing he is not working for anyone but himself.

His plans include expanding the business in Keetmanshoop and later to other regions. He also wants to find a bigger place from which he can operate.
