Ester Asheela was born and raised in northern Namibia at a place called Onyaanya in the Oshikoto Region. Asheela went to Onyaanya Primary School, Emanya Secondary School and completed grade 12 at Uukule Senior Secondary School in 2009. She was a brilliant learner throughout primary and secondary school. After completing grade 12 in 2011 with great results, she was unable to further her studies due to financial problems. Seeing others go to school fuelled her drive to chase a future and look for employment which could assist her in funding her studies.

Within six years of moving to Windhoek, she attained a diploma in information technology, a bachelor’s degree in business computing and an honours degree in IT, majoring in informatics. All qualifications were obtained from the Namibia University of Science and Technology. She also has certificates in: Microsoft Power Automate, Database Design and Management Business Analysis Fundamental, and CompTIA Security.

Prior to joining Letshego, she had seven years of working experience in the IT space. She previously worked for the ministry of education at Jan Jonker High school as an ICT teacher in the year 2014 and then joined Newpoint Electronic Solutions as an implementation specialist in 2015-2016. In the same year, she joined SME Bank as a graduate trainee and later became a core banking analyst under SME Bank liquidation.

Her daily tasks include: analysing how well software, hardware, and the wider IT system fit the business needs of Letshego Bank; developing functional specifications documents for projects to be used by system developers; acting as a central reference and information source, providing guidance and assistance in the system projects; giving day-to-day support on core banking systems to all the users; liaising with other IT staff such as programmers to produce new systems that serve the business functions; making sure that all company systems are up and running and accessible to all the users; timely resolution of e-Channel applications incidents raised within the agreed timeframe; supporting banking application projects relating to E-channels; monitoring and ensuring 24-hour availability of e-channel core banking applications.

Career successes

Asheela started her career at Letshego Bank in August 2019 as an ICT technician and due to the strong background and knowledge in the core banking environment, she was promoted as the business analyst, core banking and e-channel support within the same year and this is her current role.

“Letshego Bank offers so much growth in the IT space as it allows me to grow with it, to be challenged, to learn, and to be part of an incredible journey. I feel at home because I enjoy being challenged. In the end, there is so much to gain and grab. It feels so good to be part of an amazing and supporting department and Letshego Bank at large,” she said.

She says one of the greatest things which challenged her was the outbreak of Covid-19 in Namibia. “There was so much pressure on IT in making sure that we deliver the best services and the company continues operative, making sure that we can give support to all our users remotely and all the systems up and running. This has been an eye-opener for us to come with better solutions that allow us to still provide the best services to our customers. We need all our customers to have a great experience when it comes to Letshego products. Within the short time I have been here, it has been packings and unpacking software, loading and unloading projects,” she said.

A system resolver

Asheela says she is the first person called when the system goes down. The core banking and e-channel support role is critical to operations and a business cannot function without this valuable support.
