Otjiwarongo tables budget of nearly N$118 million
Capital projects planned by the municipality for 2019/20 totals N$17.4 million.
A special council meeting of the Otjiwarongo local authority councillors on Monday approved the municipality's 2019/20 total capital and expenditure budget of N$117.6 million.
This is N$31.2 million or nearly 21% less than the N$148.8 million budget of 2018/19.
The municipality's management committee chairperson, Hilda Jesaja, who tabled the budget, explained that the municipality had formulated this budget while taking cognisance the economic situation of the country.
“While drawing up this budget, we were also mindful of the challenges facing the municipality of providing affordable services to the residents at a cost recovery basis,” she said.
She announced the new municipal tariffs on property values, which will increase by 3%, 5.8% for sewage and 3% for sanitation charges.
Grave prices in Orwetoveni, according to Jesaja, will increase from N$900 to N$968, while the ones in town will increase from N$1 500 to N$1 775 effective from 1 July.
Salaries
A salary increase of 4% for the nearly 120 municipal workers and the sitting allowances of the seven local authority councillors was approved by council. This pushed up the municipality's salary bill by 11.6% to N$62.5 million.

Jesaja tabled the budget in the presence of three local authority councillors: Sonia Iyambo, Gottfried Ubu-Gaeb and Moderattha Shaduka.
Three other councillors - mayor Bennes Haimbondi, Gottlieb Shivute and Esmeralda !Aebes - were not present and no explanation was given by the deputy mayor Shaduka, who chaired the meeting.
The Otjiwarongo municipality's budget for 2019/20 will be forwarded in due course to the minister of urban and rural development, Peya Mushelenga, for final approval.
